Nigerian singer Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, is making big appearances in the music world. What’s unique about him is his stage name, and in a recent CNN interview, he shared the story behind it.
Asake’s stage name came from back in the days when his friends used to call him “omo Asake,” which means “child of Asake.” Eventually, they shortened it to just “Asake.” He liked the nickname, and it became his stage identity although it’s his mother’s name. This choice surprises audiences who might expect a lady on stage but rather see’s Asake, and it’s a tribute to his mother, whom he deeply loves.
Asake’s love for music goes back to his family. His dad was a singer, and his mom loved to dance. While they pursued these interests for fun, it inspired his passion for performing.
Interestingly, Asake also loved dance but chose music because he thought it could bring in more money. He does recognize that music and dance go hand in hand, and a music video without dancers can lack excitement. His talent however has earned him enough opportunities and multiple recognitions in the musical world.
